Cutting darts into a pot and rejoining the clay can transform an ordinary shape into the extraordinary. See how various shapes of darts give different results. Darting adds movement to pots, creating more interest.

~

Bring several soft clay pots to experiment on. These should be dry enough to handle but soft enough to manipulate without causing cracking. Cylindrical shaped pieces are especially suitable for darting. The cylindrical pieces should be 5″ (a good mug size) or taller and can be handbuilt or wheelthrown. If you want to try something other than a cylinder, that could also be interesting. Wide rims on plates and sides and rims of bowls could also be darted. Darts work best when the clay is about ¼” thick. Also, bring your pottery tools and an X-acto knife. These tools will also be available for purchase. Dart right in and join the fun!

Are you afraid of cutting into your newly thrown pot? Here is your support group to help get past that! Learn how to give an average pot more personality by carving and piercing. If you are already fearless, carving and piercing will add a new level of interest to your pots! This technique is useful for handbuilt or wheelthrown pieces.

~

Bring several leather-hard pieces, with walls at least ¼” thick. Clay without grog gives the best results. Bring your tools. Scalpel type knives (X-acto type) and carving tools will be available for purchase or bring your own, if you have them.
